Giants acquire A.J. Pollock, Mark Mathias from Mariners before deadline

The Giants made a couple of low-profile acquisitions on Monday, announcing they have received outfielder A.J. Pollock and infielder Mark Mathias from the Seattle Mariners in exchange for a player to be named later or cash.

San Francisco also announced that outfielder Mike Yastrzemski (left hamstring strain) has been placed on the 10-day injured list while infielder Isan Diaz was recalled from Triple-A and right-hander John Brebbia (lat strain) was transferred to the 60-day disabled list.

95.7 The Game’s “Willard & Dibs” was on the air when Jeff Passan of ESPN initially broke the news. Check out the full instant reaction:

“All right, Farhan,” Dan Dibley said. “Not waiting til the last minute.”

Pollock spent 2012-18 with the Arizona Diamondbacks before playing with the Los Angeles Dodgers from 2019-21. His final year in LA, Pollock slashed .297/.355/.536 with 21 homers, 69 RBI and a 134 OPS+, but he’s slashing just .173/.225/.323 with five homers, 15 RBI and a putrid 53 OPS+. Pollock has been on the 10-day injured list since July 22 with a left hamstring strain.

“Not far removed from being incredibly productive,” Mark Willard said. “However, 35 years old now and has only played in about half the games with the Mariners this year. …. Boy, you know Farhan loves it when he sees someone coming off injury.”

Mathias, a 28-year-old who went to Irvington high school in Fremont before playing at Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo, was claimed off waivers from the Pittsburgh Pirates this year. The utility man also has a poor offensive profile, as he is slashing .231/.355/.269 with no homers, 4 RBI and a 74 OPS+ in 22 games this year. Mathias was playing at the Triple-A level this past month before the Giants acquired him.
