After conquering Westeros as Queen Cersei Lannister, Lena Headey has set her sights on ruling outer space.
The “Game of Thrones” star has been tapped as the lead in Spectrum Originals and AMC’s new psychological sci-fi thriller “Beacon 23,” according to Deadline.
The 47-year-old will portray Aster, a woman trapped at the end of the universe who makes her way to beacon-keeper at a lighthouse in outer space. The two soon find themselves in a battle of wills to discern if either is a friend or the enemy, the outlet noted.
Created by Zak Penn, “Beacon 23” will be Headey’s first live-action television role since “Game of Thrones” ended its run in 2019.
“We had exactly one person in mind when thinking about who could play Aster – who could bring the strength, the vulnerability and the brilliance to Zak’s complex character? No one but Lena Headey,” Katherine Pope, Head of Spectrum Originals, said in a statement. “We couldn’t be more excited to go on this thrill ride with Lena and Zak leading the way.”
"Lena Headey was a wonderful, versatile actress before she gave one of the defining performances in television history. So, as they say, 'no pressure,'" Penn added. "I'm thankful to all the people making this show possible, they just keep delivering beyond my expectations."
Headey will also serve as executive producer on “Beacon 23,” which is based on the novel by Hugh Howey.
The actress famously starred as Cersei Lannister on “Game of Thrones” throughout the HBO show’s entire run and earned 5 Emmy Award nominations for the role.
She most recently did voice work for animated shows including “Infinity Train” and “Wizards: Tales of Arcadia.” On the big screen, she recently finished filming “9 Bullets” with Sam Worthington and “Gunpowder Milkshake” alongside Karen Gillan and Angela Bassett.
While a premiere date for “Beacon 23” has not been announced, it will first air for nine months on Spectrum Originals before launching on AMC.
