This man had a great day on a stranger’s yacht.
According to reports obtained by WCAX, a man was arrested after he stole a $1.2 million yacht and took it for a ride from upstate New York to Vermont on Lake Champlain.
Robert Morris, the 56-year-old suspect, allegedly said he was just giving it a test drive.
Police confirmed that the 48-foot Jeanneau Prestige 500 was stolen from the Rouses Point Marina in New York state on June 21. The boat, which is named “Volans” was allegedly found by the U.S. Border Patrol. At the time, officials were monitoring Lake Champlain using a helicopter.
Morris was then taken into custody by officers with the St. Albans Police Department on Burton Island. The 56-year-old now faces charges of possession of stolen property and operating without owner's consent.
Morris was a wanted fugitive in New Hampshire and had several prior arrests.
At the time of his arrest, Morris told cops that he was given permission to take the boat and said he was caught bringing the yacht back to its owner. However, the owner has denied that claim.
New York State Police are working out a plan to file additional charges against Morris.
Police say an investigation into the alleged theft is ongoing.
