A server in Virginia was able to afford visiting her dying brother in Virginia thanks to two generous tips from customers.
According to FOX News, 32-year-old Amy Hales picked up a few extra shifts at Waterstone Pizza.
She handed a couple a bill for $46.96, but was shocked to see the total as $246.96.
"I thought it was a $20 tip at first," she told the outlet. "I'm like, ‘Oh my gosh, that's a $20 tip on a $40 check. That's amazing.’"
When she took a closer look, she realized the tip was actually $200.
"They didn't even stick around for me to see it. They wanted no recognition from it at all," Hales said.
She explained that she was “blown away” by generosity.
But it wasn’t the last time it would happen as Hales had a similar experience a few days later when she waited on another couple.
Though their meal ended up costing less than $50, they left a $100 tip for the waitress.
"They didn't even — they wanted no recognition for it … I went to look at [the receipt] and it was $100,” she explained.
Hales said she couldn’t believe her luck: “I started crying, both times.”
Hales didn’t even know how helpful the tips would be until she got a call two-weeks later that her 29-year-old brother, who lives in Florida, was hospitalized.
WSET reports that her brother suffered three heart attacks and was given a 1% chance of survival.
She used the money to book a flight and was able to see him one last time before he passed away.
His funeral was held on March 13, the same day as her birthday.
Only after did she realize that the total cost of her roundtrip tickets was $300, the exact amount she received in tips. Without the additional money, Hales said she probably wouldn’t have been able to make the trip.
"God must have sent them to me," Hales said of the customers.
