TSA hiring 6,000 airport screening officers as travel expected to soar amid COVID vaccinations

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is going on a hiring spree.

The TSA has announced plans to hire more than 6,000 airport security screening officers by this summer as travel is expected to increase with more and more people getting COVID vaccines, reported Fox Business.

“TSOs are a critical first line defense in securing our nation’s commercial air transportation system,” Melanie Harvey, acting Executive Assistant Administrator for TSA’s Security Operations, said in a statement.

“Each day, our officers screen hundreds of thousands of airline travelers ensuring they arrive at their destinations safely. We expect to screen a higher number of travelers regularly by the summer months and will need additional officers to support our critical mission.”

The agency plans to hire both full and part-time employees at 430 U.S. airports.

“Based on anticipated seasonal travel trends in the months ahead and the progress of COVID-19 vaccinations for the general public, TSA has launched national efforts to recruit new employees in support of screening operations at approximately 430 airports nationwide,” the agency said in the announcement.

The positions include benefits such as access to medical coverage, vacation, sick leave, and retirement plans. Recruitment efforts will include virtual jobs fairs and individuals of all backgrounds, including military veterans and persons with disabilities, are being encouraged to apply.

According to News5 Cleveland, the pay range is between $17.20 to $24.57 per hour. Anyone interested can submit an application at USAJOBS.GOV.

While travel is expected to increase this summer, Dr. Anthony Fauci predicts the country will return to some sense of normalcy a little later in the year.

Activities such as safe indoor dining or attending a movie may be possible “somewhere between the fall and the end of the year,” while a return to life as it used to be may be closer to “the end of the year, by Christmas,” Fauci said this week.
