Belton High School

"Belton High School (BHS) and the Belton Community are working together to transform the high school experience for our students. We are in partnership with Ford Next Generation Learning (Ford NGL) and the Kauffman Foundation in year two of the implementation of this transformation, focusing on student engagement, Real World Learning and preparing our students for College or Career and Life. Three Academies, with three to five pathways within each, make up the Academies of Belton. One of our Academies is Science & Industry with a Construction and Architecture pathway. Should BHS be selected, we would use the $ 15,000 grant to refurbish our facility to better deliver a construction trades curriculum. We have sufficient space, but it is in need of the following: equipment repairs, updated ventilation system, and the purchase of new and additional tools and equipment. During the 2020 - 2021 school year we had 40 sophomores enrolled in this pathway course. An additional 33 students have enrolled for the 2021 - 2022 school year. We anticipate this number will continue each year and so by the time all three levels are implemented we would have over 100 students preparing for a career in the Construction Trades. Our design is that Level 3 students would work together using the skills they have developed to build a Tiny Home. The Design and Marketing Pathway students in our Academies of Belton will partner in this work. We have been collaborating with the Carpenter’s Union, Builders’ Association, NICE and a number of individual contractors to identify the skills students need to be prepared for careers in these fields. The grant will go far to aid in providing opportunities for our students and building a skilled workforce in career paths which need workers. Thank you for your consideration." - Stacey Yurkovich

"I would like to nominate the Agriculture Science Department at Belton High School to be the recipient of this grant. There are currently 78 students enrolled in the Ag Science Program at Belton, and the number just keeps growing. Part of this growth means that there are new classes being offered. With the help of this grant, the Ag Science Program would create a Food Science Lab to teach the students how to process and create food along with learning the science behind food." - Cyndee Regers
