Hogan Preparatory Academy
I am in the Special Education Department and we have seen a big influx of students that are very low academically. These students need to be provided with education in the area of life skills so that they can be successful after graduation. The students need a life skills center set up in a classroom so that they are able to practice those necessary skills. Items necessary would be a refrigerator, stove, microwave, and all other items necessary as if you were setting up a kitchen in your house. They need a washer and dryer so that they can learn sorting, measuring, washing, and folding skills. Many of our students do not have those in their homes. They would need a bedroom or an area set up like one, and a bathroom to learn necessary cleaning skills. They would need living room pieces so that they can learn to keep house. They would need a cash register so that they could learn to add up items bought and learn to give change. There are many other extremely useful items that are necessary to start a life skills center, but those are the basics. Think about your daily life and the things to need to know just to survive. That is what we are going to have to teach our students.
