Whitefield Academy

"Critical Thinkers. Clear Communicators. Compassionate Leaders. Twenty-five years ago a handful of Kansas City Metro parents (from both sides of the State Line) started a small school with the mission to raise students to be critical thinkers, clear communicators and compassionate leaders. In our twenty-five years we have grown from those handful of students to a Pre-Kindergarten - 12th grade school with a wait list!

Our parents work hard and make sacrifices to send their kids to Whitefield Academy located at 89th St. between Holmes and Troost. Our administrators and teachers pour their heart and souls into walking alongside and nurturing our student’s hearts.  Our curriculum is different than most schools. Whitefield teaches a Classical education format.  This means that we do not teach to take tests, even though we rate in the top 3 private schools in the KC area on standardized tests.  Classical education provides the academic excellence and moral framework to fight injustice. It encourages students to pursue the why, how and who of ideas and decisions in addition to the what, and helps develop young people who own their power to enrich their lives and the lives of others.  We are teaching our children to think for themselves, communicate clearly and then to go lead and serve others.

An example of how we teach serving others is through our annual “Serve Day”.  Each class, PreK-12th grade, takes a specific day (normally mid-October) and Kansas City becomes our classroom!  We serve food pantries, children in the inner city, the elderly, and various rescue missions throughout the Kansas City area.  2021 will be our 9th year of this community focused project.

We are now a leading private classical, Christian school Pre-K - 12th grade and some class sizes have doubled over the last 4 years!  We are running out of space!  We are good stewards of our money and in recent years have purchased two houses next to our current building, as well as the land between Holmes & Troost (behind our current building).   We are raising money to build additional classrooms in these houses.  Our next big endeavor is a full size gym and basketball court!  This would help our students in so many ways including more movement, school spirit, hosting events and more!  Our current volleyball and basketball teams have to rent spaces throughout the city to practice and play.

The 610 Sports, 99,7 The Point, Sheet Metal Workers’ Local Union No. 2, and SMNCNA Facilities Enrichment Grant would help us tremendously in reaching our goals!  Please consider Whitefield Academy as we continue to serve both Kansas and Missouri families, as well as the entire KC Metro area!

"Whitefield provides a Chritian based learning that genuinely prepares children to learn, grow and become well rounded adults. They make private education affordable by doing without things that could greatly benefit the teachers and the students and still manage to produce exceptional results. They have been open for in person learning for the entire 2020/2021 school year and their focus on the children shows with the safe virus outbreak free record theyve been able to achieve. This is a great lottle school with exceptional teachers who produce wonderful adults back into our community. I cant think of anyone more deserving." - Kevin McBee

"We are a small classical school that could use the grant to go toward giving our students a full sized gym." - Paul Hefferon

"Our school could use a facilities grant in so many ways. Not only is a soccer field needed, but many updates to the building are necessary to keep our school running smoothly and continuing to grow - new classrooms and updated bathrooms." - Sarah Swanson

"Whitefield Academy is a small private school, but it acts like a big one with a lot of heart. Even during COVID, they have strived to keep our students' school experience as normal and as rich as it would have been. This isn't just the excellent academic experience, but the high value on the whole student including music, the arts, trips, volunteering and service, and sports. I love this about them, but the size limits their ability to provide. We are always scrambling to find basketball courts and soccer fields to rent. If we had better facilities, we could also be a better host to other schools that we play and build our school spirit. My daughter played basketball for the first time this year. She had to learn everything from the ground up.  The coach was amazing, which I wasn't surprised. But I was surprised that the athletic director was there at every game, filming for the rest of us who couldn't watch in person, and that the varsity coach was there cheering on the junior high team before the varsity team. The sports and athletic staff at Whitefield are excellent and it would be great to say that our facilities were too. We have the space for it--we just need the funds. Please choose Whitefield!" - Noella Chung

"Whitefield Academy is a unique and amazing school! Families drive from all over the K.C. metro area so that their kids can learn in a safe, loving environment. The teachers are gifted and caring, and even though the school don't have all of the "bells and whistles" that many high schools do, we are thankful for what we do have. Unfortunately, our sports teams are severely limited, in that we don't have a "home gym" or a "home soccer field" to play against other teams. Our soccer field is too small to hold games and our gym is only a 1/2 court gym. We do the best we can, but our high school athletes would love to be able to host home games at home! $15,000 would be a good start in helping us to raise money to build a gym and to make the soccer field bigger. Families are sacrificing already in order to send our kids to WA, so there's not much extra for huge expenses.

Last spring when COVID hit, we were out of school a few extra days, but then the teachers jumped in with teaching every day on Zoom. Our high schoolers attended every class, every day, for 30 minutes on Zoom, then had homework in the afternoons.  They worked so hard, when many schools did nothing. This year our school has been in session, in person, since Aug. 20 and has not had to stop. The headmaster, staff and teachers have gone above and beyond to take the necessary precautions to keep everyone safe. While students don't all like wearing masks, they are thankful to be in person, in school!

Thank you for considering a grant for Whitefield Academy in KC, MO." - Shirlene Kazmaier
