Going into 2021's NFL Draft, the Chiefs' needs at tight end weren't exactly an industry secret. With the team looking to increase the depth of their room behind Travis Kelce, trading up to draft Duke tight end Noah Gray with the 162nd overall pick last weekend. Unsurprisingly, it wasn't too long after that when Gray first heard from his new teammate. Speaking on a Wednesday afternoon appearance on the Cody & Gold show, Gray detailed his first conversation with Kelce.
"Yeah, he sent me a text afterwards congratulating me," he said. "We're ready to work, you know? So I was very appreciative of him, it was really cool. It seems like he's a really great guy, which seems like it'll lead to him being a really great mentor and leader, so I'm just excited to be able to learn from him.
"I'm in the best situation possible, if I'm being completely honest, coming in as a rookie. Maybe some guys may think it'd be awesome to go to a team with not a whole lot of solidified tight ends, so that they can squeeze in and get a lot playing time right away. But I think for me, going to a team with a guy like Kelce is great for me. I get to learn from one of the best tight ends in the league. I get to contribute in whatever way the coaches see fit and still maintain that learning environment. He's a great guy - that's what I think through my conversations with people that I know him through, so I'm just excited."
