With the Chiefs having two first round picks in this weekend's NFL Draft, there's been plenty of speculation -- both realistic and, well, less so -- about what Brett Veach and company might do with them. On one hand, there's an argument to be made that the team has enough roster holes to keep both picks, in hopes that they can grab one or two Day 1 starters. On the other, with such an uncertain draft board this year, it may make sense to try and move one of those picks in order to get up, or down, the board. Speaking with 610's Cody and Gold on Tuesday, The Athletic's Nate Taylor gave his best guess about how crazy the Chiefs could really get if they wanted to trade up.
"For the Chiefs specifically, I think if you wanted to be as bold as possible, I think 12 with Minnesota is your highest trade up capability," he said. "I think realistically, you could be in that 18-21 range. I wonder if Chiefs fans have thought about this: what the Chargers do is really, really fascinating. Because the Chargers probably need a receiver, and they could also take an offensive lineman if they so well choose. Can you get ahead of them if you're penciling receiver for them at their spot. They're 17. There's so many variables that it's hard to get a sense of what the team can do. Some people have argued that maybe you should trade down, I tend not to think in that regard, just because you should just take two first picks. You may not have first two round players available to you in next year's draft, or subsequent drafts moving forward. So this is an opportunity where you can move up and keep 30 or 29, depending on what the other team is asking for in a trade. But I'm not a proponent of trading down when you already have two second-round picks."
