How Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid can become the NFL's best coach-QB duo again

Chiefs insider Pete Sweeney explains.

Basically since the moment Patrick Mahomes was named the starter, he and Andy Reid have been considered the best coach-QB combo in the NFL. And it was hard to argue that, too -- until this year. After a lackluster first half of 2021, can Mahomes and Reid rediscover what made them such a prolific duo? And what will that take? Talking with 610's Fescoe In The Morning, Chiefs Insider Pete Sweeney explained:

"I think it's being honest with yourself," he said. "And from what you've been hearing for a couple weeks, they're saying the right things. I think that's the first step. Now, you want to see it taking place on the field. I think we are seeing baby steps from Patrick Mahomes and I think you're seeing baby steps, in a sense, from Andy Reid ... there seems to be a commitment over the weekend for the Chiefs to say, 'Look, we're going to go out and run the football.' You saw them run seven times in the opening drive and you saw that it ended up in a touchdown, and it kind of looked like that old Chiefs offense."

"I think there are things that Andy Reid can do, I think there are still things that Patrick Mahomes is working through. We're seeing an offseason project in Patrick Mahomes -- as far as decision-making, footwork, and staying in the pocket -- during in the season. Typically this is stuff you'd want to work on and rebuild in the offseason, but just the way the timing worked out, I don't know if the Chiefs realized that he needed this type of thing until the season began."
