(610 Sports) – Sunday's AFC Championship Game ended in disappointment for Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs. After tying the game on a 49-yd Harrison Butker field goal at the end of regulation, the Chiefs looked to be in a position to repeat their prior week's comeback win over the Bills in overtime.
After winning the overtime coin toss and electing to receive the ball, everything seemed to be lining up for Kansas City to make their third-straight Super Bowl appearance.
Unlike the week before, where he marched the team directly down the field and hit Travis Kelce in the corner of the end zone for a game-winning touchdown, Patrick Mahomes continued his sub-par second-half play.
Following two straight incompletions, one of which should have been intercepted by Bengals' cornerback Eli Apple, Mahomes looked to push the ball downfield and give Tyreek Hill a chance to make a big play. On 3rd & 10, Mahomes went deep down the sidelined to Hill who looked to have a step on his man, unfortunately, a second defender was able to tip the ball right to Bengals safety Vonn Bell for the interception.
Speaking with reporters after the game, Mahomes was asked about the play and what it was that he saw from the defense on the play.
"I knew the safety was going to make a run at it, but I just gave my guy a chance. It got tipped," said Mahomes. "A good play by one safety and it fell right into the other dude’s hands."
Obviously, the result wasn't what he had hoped for but Mahomes made it clear that if he had it to do over again, he'd make the same throw.
"I would’ve done it again, said Mahomes. "Whenever you have a guy like Tyreek running and he has a step on someone, give him a chance to make a play. I would say 8 times out of 10 he makes that catch. So, didn’t work for us today, but that’s a play I would go to again if I had the chance."
