Nate Taylor on where Chiefs, Tyrann Mathieu stand on any potential contract extension

The Chiefs' insider was in-studio with Cody and Gold on Thursday.

The 2021 Chiefs are starting to come into focus, and with only one preseason game left, there's not much time left for Brett Veach and the rest of Kansas City's front office to cross off all their summer to-do's. One notable example? The (presumed) contract extension for safety Tyrann Mathieu. Mathieu's playing on the final year of his current deal, and the recent extension for Seattle's Jamal Adams set the market for top-tier safeties. With the bargaining window seemingly closing, the lack of a deal is -- according to The Athletic's Nate Taylor -- one of the biggest remaining question of the Chiefs' preseason. Sitting in with Cody and Gold on Thursday afternoon, Taylor explained why.

"It's still somewhat fluid, and things could chance, but it's looking more and more, as each day goes on, that Tryann Mathieu will play on the contract he's on right now," Taylor said. "The Chiefs and Tryann will have to see if they can come to some sort of negotiation agreement in the middle of the season, if not late in the season, before Tyrann reaches free agency."
