One of the more pleasant surprises through the first quarter of the 2022 season for the Chiefs has been their stellar defense. The unit has taken a back seat for most of the years during the Patrick Mahomes era, but this year's group looks about as good as any that Mahomes has seen during his time in Kansas City. Ahead of Monday Night's AFC West matchup with the Raiders, 610's Chiefs Insider Pete Sweeney called into Cody and Gold to explain how it's gone so well for them so far.
"To me, the defense is the most important thing," he said. "Because if you have Patrick Mahomes and you don't have a defense? 2018 was not too long ago, and you saw what a disaster that was. Basically, like he had to do in college, he had to do everything to possibly allow this team to get a victory. Whereas I think nowadays, especially in this current iteration of the Chiefs defense, it's become the reason that they win some games. If the defense didn't play the way they did against the Los Angeles Chargers, the Chiefs are potentially 2-2 with a loss in the division."
