It's hard to imagine the Chiefs putting up better numbers without All-Pro receiver Tyreek Hill, but is it possible that their offense finds a way to be more productive? The additions of JuJu Smith-Schuster and Marquez Valdes-Scantling -- along with the returning players of this current core -- have some people thinking that, while looking different, the offense may be able to be more efficient than in year's past. Consider 610's Chiefs Insider Pete Sweeney one of those people, and while speaking to Fescoe In The Morning on Tuesday, he explained why.
"I just think it's going to be a more balanced attack," he said. "As you saw, the league adjusted to the Chiefs from '18 on. '18, '19, and '20 was way more explosive. And then you had '21, which felt like the outlier, where the league started to, in a sense, catch up to a little bit of what the Chiefs were doing. Now, you're still top-5 in offense, so what does catch up really mean? But you want to be top-1, I think that's the expectation that Andy Reid and Pat Mahomes set for themselves, and they have an opportunity to really scratch and start over. I thought the Chiefs were best last year when they leaned into that balance. Teams have found ways to curve Tyreek Hill by playing a safety all the way back and saying, 'you're not going to get behind us anymore.' And so with that being the case, now you make your adjustment ... we'll see how it goes, but it isn't necessarily a bad thing where you're replacing the Tyreek Hill-focused offense, and now you're going to be leaving these defensive coordinators wondering where these 159 2021 targets are going."
