J.J. Picollo: Bobby Witt Jr. has 'a flair for the dramatic'

There certainly wasn't a shortage of coverage surrounding Bobby Witt Jr.'s debut last week, and the young prospect didn't waste any time showcasing why exactly everyone around baseball was so excited to see him in the big leagues. Whether it was clutch hits, timely defensive plays, or smart base-running, Witt's opening weekend probably couldn't have gone much better, even if the team perhaps underwhelmed after winning the first two games of a four game series. Speaking with 610's Cody and Gold on Tuesday, Royals GM JJ Picollo talked about what his first impressions of Witt at the major league level were.

"Considering it's still a position he's learning, and he's learning on the fly at the highest level of the game, he played really well," he said. "I think we saw that he has a flair for the dramatic. He doesn't vibrate in big situations. The play he made defensively was as good of a play as we'll probably see all year, at probably the most key point of a game you could possibly have. So that was really great to see. Made a play to his left that was really good. He even ranged on a ball that was foul, that most guys aren't going to get to, but he got to it. So there's a lot of promise there. And obviously coming up with a big hit on Opening Day was just a big, huge moment for us, and for him to start off his career."
