(610 Sports) -- If anyone would be familiar with the ups and downs in Major League Baseball, it would be former Royals' third baseman/outfielder Alex Gordon. In 14 MLB seasons, Gordon's Royals experienced 10 losing seasons but also made two World Series appearances, while winning it all in 2015. So who better to give advice on how to deal with the team's current eight-game skid, than Gordon.
Appearing on his weekly, "The Brad Keller Show" segment with Fescoe in the Morning on 610 Sports, Keller talked about a recent golf outing with Gordon and was asked what advice, if any, that Gordon had shared from a player's perspective on dealing with the ups and downs that this year's Royals' team has experienced?
"Umm, he basically kept it simple. He was just like, 'you can't crack, it's a long season, and if you start pressing, pressing, and pressing, things spiral worse,'" Keller recalled. "You just gotta show up every day with a good attitude and go out there and compete and things are eventually gonna take care of themselves like that's just the game of baseball, it always seems to come around."
Gordon, who was always known for his insane work ethic, would know. Being the 2nd overall selection in the 2005 MLB Draft, Gordon dealt with plenty of ups and downs in his career, which included numerous stints in the Royals minor league system but concluded with a club record 8 Gold Gloves and a World Series Championship.
"It's just we're in a skid right no, we can't sit there and try to reinvent the wheel during this period, we just gotta keep doing what we're doing, doing what we did in April, doing what got us here and you know, eventually it's gonna turn around," said Keller.
"That was kind of his advice to us, was just keep it simple and keep showing up and keep competing every day."
Keller, who has had his own personal struggles on the mound, this season but looked much more in control in his last start, also shared what had helped to regain his form.
"I basically went out there and had fun," Keller said. We made some mechanical adjustments that we saw on video and that helped out a lot. I think I had really good command and really good life on my fastball, so I mean it was a lot more enjoyable being out there with such a good, free, and clear mind, so just trying to carry that over into my next start, as well."
