Royals' Whit Merrifield: 2021 season has been 'a little bit of a roller coaster' so far

Merrifield explained how the team's viewed their first two months.

Fair or not, Memorial Day Weekend has always been viewed as something of a bellwether on the MLB calendar. Teams have played roughly one-third of their schedule, and as sample sizes start to grow, team identities begin to more seriously reveal themselves. For the Royals, a weekend series win over the Twins helped bring their record back to .500, and improved play over the last couple weeks has people wondering if they're a team that can stick around through most, if not all, of the summer. Calling in for his weekly radio hit on 610's Cody and Gold, utility man Whit Merrifield explained how the 2021 season has been viewed in the team's clubhouse.

"Yeah, it's been a little bit of a roller coaster," he said on Tuesday. "Definitely been some ups and some downs, but we're in a better spot than we've been in year's past come this time, June 1st. I don't think we're necessarily thrilled with where we are, but considering how we've played and where we're at, I think we're relatively happy with being .500 on June 1st."

"I think we knew going in who we were and what we're capable of," he added. "It's just a matter of going out and executing, and putting together good stretches and weathering the storms when the bad stretches come."
