(610 Sports) – As Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs prepare to take on the Cleveland Browns in Week 1 of the regular season, Mahomes can't help but pay attention to what's going on next door at Kauffman Stadium. Royals catcher Salvador Perez is in the zone and on the verge of some pretty impressive feats.
Perez, who has 41 home runs through September 6th, has a chance to not only break the Royals single-season home run record, but the single-season record for home runs by a catcher, as well. If those feats aren't impressive enough on their own, Perez has done this while maintaining the caliber of defense that has won him 5 Gold Gloves.
Joining Carrington Harrison of 610 Sports 'The Drive,' on Tuesday, Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes was asked to weigh in on Pere'z special season.
"I think I tweeted something about it, probably two weeks ago now," said Mahomes. "I was like, Salvador Perez isn't getting talked about enough and the season that he's having. It could be, very well, the best season statistically hitting, a catcher has ever had."
"As an athlete, what's it like to be in that zone, where for a 4-6 week stretch everything clicks for you," Mahomes was asked?
"Yeah, I mean it's a special feeling," said Mahomes. "I know a lot of times in games, it gets like that sometimes, it feels like every throw you'e making is the right throw, every guy you look at gets open, you're in the zone I guess you would say."
"I know for him, when you're hitting and hitting the ball that well, it's like every single pitch you're hitting a softball, not a baseball. It's something that you don't get very often. so you wanna capitalize when you do get it."
While the eyes of sports fans have began to drift from MLB to NFL, we should all continue to pay attention to the special season that Salvador Perez is having and cheer him on as he looks to add to his already impressive list of awards and accomplishments. Go get 'em, Salvy!
