What started as a bizarre bathroom discovery turned into something far more meaningful.
A few days ago, a silver-colored ring sitting at the bottom of a workplace toilet launched one of the strangest adventures in Christine & Salt history. There was the failed rescue attempt. There was the triumphant second extraction involving pug poop bags. There was the suspicious “antiques expert” who declared the ring an ancient Roman artifact worth a fortune. And there was the shocking plot twist when the ring’s owner came forward. Using the name “Monica,” she told us she had intentionally thrown the ring into the toilet after learning her soon-to-be ex-husband had been cheating on her. To make matters worse, she discovered he had given the exact same cheap ring to the other woman.
In perhaps the greatest glow-up in Connecticut history, the toilet ring went from bathroom bowl to charitable gold. Terrie and Mark Merino donated $500 to take home the infamous piece of jewelry, and Rise and Shine CT matched the donation. Just like that, the ring’s final value wasn’t measured in dollars—it became a $1,000 gift to My Sister’s Place in Ansonia.
My Sister’s Place operates a thrift store that helps fund programs and services for victims of domestic violence and their children. Every purchase, donation, and contribution helps provide safety, support, and hope for families rebuilding their lives after abuse. In a way, it feels fitting. A ring that represented betrayal and heartbreak has now been transformed into something positive — helping people who may be facing some of the hardest moments of their lives. Not bad for a piece of jewelry that spent two days at the bottom of a toilet.
So while we still don’t know exactly what Terrie and Mark plan to do with the ring, we do know one thing: Its value was never in the metal. Its value was in the story. And thanks to some incredibly generous listeners, that story now has a pretty beautiful ending.
What began as a bizarre bathroom rescue mission ended with a powerful act of generosity, as listeners, Terrie and Mark Merino, and Rise and Shine CT turned a discarded ring into a $1,000 donation for My Sister’s Place in Ansonia.
