The holidays can be a challenging time for many, and this year, Christine and Salt heard a story that touched their hearts deeply. As part of their Rise and Shine CT charity and the 5000 Toys for Girls and Boys year-end fundraiser, they invited a young man with a moving story to share.
Christine’s 19-year-old son, Ian, who pitches for Central Connecticut State University, came home over Thanksgiving break with heartbreaking news. His teammate and friend, TJ Magliozzo, had lost his father, Thomas Magliozzo, suddenly and unexpectedly. Despite his grief, TJ wanted to honor his dad’s memory by sharing his incredible legacy on the radio.
Thomas Magliozzo, a devoted husband and father, lived a life full of love, laughter, and generosity. He was a former Academic All-American and pitcher at Monmouth University, a man who cherished family ski trips, baseball games, and even Disney adventures. His sharp wit and kind heart left a lasting impact on everyone he met. Thomas was so proud of his children, from seeing TJ recruited by CCSU for baseball to knowing his daughter would join the same university to play lacrosse.
When TJ spoke about his father, his pride and gratitude were palpable. Christine was so moved that she and her family decided to honor Thomas’s generous spirit by committing to donate yearly to 5000 Toys for Girls and Boys in his memory. TJ and his family were grateful for this gesture, saying it was a beautiful way to keep Thomas’s spirit alive.
For anyone struggling this holiday season—whether it’s grief, loneliness, or hardship—TJ’s story reminds us that giving can be a powerful way to heal. Donating in a loved one’s honor can bring a sense of connection, hope, and purpose. Whether it’s through counseling, prayer, or acts of kindness, finding ways to process grief can lead to new ways of honoring those we’ve lost.
On this #GivingTuesday, we encourage you to give back to a cause that’s meaningful to you. It doesn’t have to be 5000 Toys for Girls and Boys (though we’d be honored if it is!). Whether you donate your time, resources, or simply a kind word to someone in need, the act of giving can do your heart—and the world—a lot of good.
As for young TJ, we’ll be cheering you on at CCSU this season. Your dad’s legacy shines brightly, and we know he’s watching proudly from above.
