Students at the University of North Georgia began their semester during the COVID-19 pandemic by hosting a wild party.
Videos that surfaced on social media show multiple students sans face masks and not following social distancing guidelines.
The New York Post reported that officials say the party was held at a privately owned, off-campus apartment complex in Dahlonega, Georgia.
An Instagram page that posts Georgia events shared the insane video. The caption read, “Last night at the University of North Georgia in Dahlonega.”
“We are aware that a large outdoor party was held at a privately-owned, off-campus apartment complex located near our Dahlonega campus Saturday night,” UNG spokeswoman Sylvia Carson wrote in a statement.
The statement continued to say that the college was disappointed that many students ignored COVID-19 public health guidance.
The University of North Georgia began the first full day of classes on Monday. In preparation for the school year, the college posted a video explaining how UNG has taken multiple steps to promote the health of students, faculty, staff, and campus visitors.
The school plans to regularly disinfect high-traffic areas and make hand sanitizer available throughout the campus.
Classrooms with a normal capacity of 40 students will only allow for 20 students, and signs will be posted outside of each room to make students aware of the new capacity restrictions.
While students are heading back to the classroom, Georgia is continuing to see a spike in the number of COVID-19 cases.
On August 6, the State Department of Public Health reported 201,713 confirmed cases with a positivity rate of 11%. The rate has steadily been increasing since mid-June, and the total number of deaths from the virus is currently 3,984 statewide.
The newest milestone ranks Georgia as the 5th state in the country to reach 200,000 cases following California, Florida, Texas, and New York.
