A limited-edition “special interest” license plate gives residents a chance to show a slice of pride in Connecticut’s famed pizza.
A batch of 500 license plates is being sold through Taste of New Haven founder Colin Caplan. They display a pizza slice, the logo for Connecticut Foodshare and the slogan “The Pizza State.”
Caplan doesn’t mind if “The Pizza State” boast disturbs some New Yorkers. In fact, he welcomes it:
“Part of the purpose of this plate is to rally Connecticut people, and sort of deter New Yorkers from thinking they have the best.”
Charity is another purpose. While plate proceeds go to the DMV, Caplan says the plates’ message encourages assistance to Connecticut Foodshare, which recently lost federal funding. Tens of thousands of residents rely on the major food charity.
“With the awareness comes volunteers, comes people asking ‘How can I help?’” says Caplan. “We put a donation button directly on the site that you order from… We have a job to do, and that is correcting the wrong—the injustice happening to this wonderful organization. That’s what community is all about.
The plates are available through the Taste of New Haven website. They’re $75 each, or $144 for a vanity plate.
