HARTFORD, CONN (WTIC Radio)- Advocates are looking to reform the juvenile justice system in Connecticut, separating incarceration
from the adult population and addressing the root causes of crime while abolishing barriers to higher education.
Supporters are concerned that a juvenile's past history could be used to prevent acceptance into higher education opportunities.
Another measure centers on school discipline.
A representative from the Connecticut Justice Alliance said a plan to repurpose a Middletown facility for youth is a good idea, but might take a decade to occur.
Republican East Lyme State Representative Holly Cheeseman said youth should get a second chance, but she worries about public safety for more serious crime committed by youth, particularly in a higher education setting.
Cheesman endorses the Middletown facility plan and doubts it'll take a decade to evolve.
