An attempted carjacking escalated into a deadly shootout outside an apartment building in Hartford's Parkville neighborhood Monday afternoon, according to police. One person was killed and two others were reported in critical-but-stable condition.
Hartford Police Lt. Aaron Boisvert says that shots were fired at about 3:15 pm in the parking lot of the Lofts on Park, at 1429 Park St. Initial investigation shows that two men pointed guns at a driver as he got into his vehicle. The driver grabbed his own gun and opened fire.
"There was an exchange of gunfire: the victim and suspects shooting at each other," says Boisvert.
A male victim, one of the carjacking suspects, was pronounced dead at the scene. He's been identified as Jahziel Phillips-Ray, 23, of Hartford.
A second victim is the apparent target of the carjacking, and is a licensed gun owner, also according to police. He suffered multiple gunshot wounds, and is reported to be in critical-but-stable condition.
A third victim was driven to Hartford Hospital in a private vehicle. He's identified as Joseph Ray, 22, of Hartford, and has been placed under arrest. Ray faces charges including attempted murder, criminal gun possession, conspiracy to commit robbery, assault and conspiracy to commit assault. He's also in critical-but-stable condition.
