HARTFORD, Conn. (WTIC Radio) - Connecticut pushes back on a letter from U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi that alleges the state operates under sanctuary policies.
The letter received last week sought to confirm by Tuesday of this week the state's commitment to complying with federal law.
In a letter Tuesday from Governor Lamont to Bondi, he says Connecticut complies with federal law and even cites a leter from the Department of Justice, during President Trump's first term, that verified Connecticut was in compliance with federal laws requiring the state communicate with federal agencies about immigration and naturalization services.
Lamont's letter says connecticut wants to arrest, prosecute, and, when appropriate, deport violent criminals but is critical of the Department of Homeland Security's tactics in doing so.
Connecticut Senate Republicans issued a written statement in response to that letter. The caucus called Connecticut a "super sanctuary" that has prohibited state and local law enforcement from cooperating with federal authorities, while citing incidents of violent crime, including strangulation and assualt.
