East Hartford, Conn./WTIC Radio - An arrest has been made in East Hartford in connection with a murder that was committed over 50 years ago.

It was October of 1973 that Janet Couture, 21, was found stabbed to death in her Cannon Road home.

Now under arrest is George Legere.

Couture was home alone at the time when Legere allegedly entered the residence through a window, according to police.

He is now 77.

Police say detectives doggedly investigated the case for decades with a break coming in 2021 when Legere was picked up by Avon police on a kidnapping charge.

He'd been a suspect in the Couture case but was not arrested due to lack of evidence at the time, police said.

Legere's arrest in Avon helped East Hartford detectives connect him to closed cases in the 1960s that had similarities to the Couture murder.

He's currently at MacDougall-Douglas Correctional Institution serving 25 years in the Avon crime.

“Bringing closure to victims’ families is a top priority for our team of detectives,” said East Hartford
Police Chief Mack S. Hawkins. “We are committed to pursuing justice in every case, no matter how
much time has passed. For the Couture family, this is especially significant, and we hope it brings them
some measure of peace.”
