Hartford, Conn.(WTIC Radio)-As the city of Hartford develops more housing downtown and increases pedestrian traffic, the Council
Monday night considers a red light camera pilot program, according to Council Member John Gale.

Like other Connecticut cities, Hartford has experienced an uptick in motor vehicle and pedestrian fatalities, Gale said.

Under the program, cameras would record the activity of vehicles passing thought Hartford's busier intersections.

According to Gale, the proposal at this point is not for enforcement purposes, nor would it be a revenue generator, but rather an effort to have drivers conform to safe driving habits, he said.

"We're looking to bring more life to the streets of the city and we're making tremendous inroads creating more housing downtown. That will put more feet on the street. In conjunction with that it's got to be a safe environment for folks".

The proposal requires state legislative approval. The proposal Monday night is likely to be forwarded to the Quality of Life and Public Safety Committee for further review, Gale explained.
