Icy roads proved to be a real challenge for early morning commuters Wednesday morning.

Snow turned to sleet and freezing rain late Tuesday while temperatures struggled to rise above freezing until the sun began to rise.

Crashes closed I-91 Southbound in Hartford, Route 15 Northbound in East Hartford, I-84 in Southington, and Route 8 in Bridgeport. State Route 39 in New Fairfield closed for a dump truck crash, also.

Other crashes that didn't result in total highway closures happened in New Haven, Milford, Southbury,

The Connecticut Department of Transportation, through its Communications Director Josh Morgan, told WTIC Radio that road crews that were out overnight, trying to treat the slick roads, reported that motorists were generally driving too fast for conditions.

A DOT truck was involved in the Southington crash. No serious injuries were reported.
