It was around 9:00 p.m. Monday that police received a 911 call from the victim's 17-year-old son that his mother had been assaulted.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

Her younger three-year old child was in the home but not harmed.

Police later arrested Ewen Dewitt in West Haven.

He was arraigned today on charges of murder, violating a protective order, violating a restraining order and risk of injury.

Police believe an axe may have been used in the attack but that will be officially determined by the medical examiner.

Bond was set at $5 million.

Officials say Dewitt was arrested three years ago for assaulting the victim.

It was just last week detectives say the victim was granted a full no contact restraining order after having received a series of harassing text messages.
