MANSFIELD, Conn. (WTIC Radio) - A train derailment in Mansfield has led to a shelter in place.
The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection reports 10 train cars derailed on the tracks that run alongside Route 32 in Mansfield, between Routes 44 and 275, in the Eagleville section of town.
All ten train cars involved in this derailment went into the water.
Six of the cars were carrying propane, and the other four were carrying cooking grease.
The Connecticut Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection reports no leaks have occurred.
The CT DEEP originally reported a half-mile evacuation was likely but it is now a shelter-in-place.
Stephanie Reitz, a spokeswoman for the University of Connecticut, tells WTIC News that "the site isn’t contiguous to UConn property, although the detours may cause delays for people traveling nearby. There are no interruptions or impacts on classes, work schedules, or other campus operations, though."
There's no word what led up to the derailment or when cleanup efforts may be completed.
