North Haven, Conn (WTIC Radio) - After retiring the Indian mascot from the North Haven school district, a Board of Education committee has begun the process to name a new one, according to First Selectman Mike Freda.

"My estimation based on the number of suggestions they're getting, I would anticipate it being in late December or the first of the year... it could go longer based on feedback from the public," Freda said, referring to when a new name will be chosen.

The move to eliminate the Indian mascot from the district's branding effort created controversy earlier this year, Freda said.

The Native and Indigenous community of North Haven, residents and  students are involved in the selection process.
