New Britain, Conn./WTIC Radio - Former New Britain Mayor Erin Stewart has officially kicked off her run for the Republican gubernatorial nomination.

On Monday, Stewart filed her paperwork with the State Elections Enforcement Commission.

Tuesday, Stewart released a campaign announcement video on her social media platforms.

In it, she said "I'm running for Governor because the clowns in Hartford have run our state into the ground."

Stewart, 38, recently completed her sixth two-year term as mayor of New Britain.

She has touted being able to get things done as a Republican in a primarily Democratic city.

Stewart's announcement sets up a primary battle with state Senator Ryan Fazio of Greenwich.

In a statement, Fazio said “I welcome former Mayor Stewart to the race and look forward to a constructive discussion about charting a new direction for Connecticut. Voter’s support must be earned. I look forward to giving them an opportunity to examine our records..."

Stewart will hold an official campaign kick off Thursday at 5:00 p.m. at New Britain Stadium.
