Police officials say members of the department's street crime unit were positioned at Gilbert and Hinman Streets.

That's when they say Harvey Nelson, 28, fired a half dozen shots at the police vehicle from a Honda Accord before fleeing the scene.

No police officers were injured.

Later, police say the suspect vehicle was found on Chapel Street in back of an apartment building in New Haven.

Police from West Haven and New Haven surrounded the building and Nelson eventually surrendered.

He's facing assault charges and being held on $500,000 bond.

Additionally, police said Nelson was also served with a warrant from a prior domestic charge.

And he also faces three counts of failure to appear stemming from warrants by police in New Haven, Naugatuck and Bridgeport.
