Waterbury, Conn./WTIC Radio - A Waterbury police officer is on administrative leave following an apparent incident during a traffic stop earlier this month.

The department says around 9:00 p.m. on May 2nd, the officer in question attempted a motor vehicle stop at West Main and Willow Streets.

The vehicle made an illegal turn, police said.

The suspect took off.

A statement from Waterbury police only says that the officer acted in an "unprofessional manner" during interviews with those connected to the fleeing vehicle, adding that the behavior runs counter to Waterbury police standards.

Police Chief Fernando Spagnolo said, "We are committed to transparency and accountability, and I want to assure the citizens of Waterbury that a thorough and impartial investigation will be conducted to address this matter appropriately."

The officer's leave is pending a full internal affairs investigation
