HARTFORD, Conn. (WTIC Radio) - Connecticut State Police are investigating a wrong-way crash that injured a State Trooper in Hartford.
Trooper Charles Luby, 25, was on-duty around 8:13 p.m. Tuesday night while driving westbound on Jennings Road in Hartford.
As he approached the intersection with I-91, Trooper Luby noticed a vehicle, identified as a 2019 Honda Pilot LX, was driving in the wrong-direction on the I-91 Southbound Exit 33 on-ramp.
State Police then say the operator, identified as Christopher Velazquez, 43, of Wethersfield, then started to travel the wrong way, heading east in the westbound lanes, on Jennings Road.
Trooper Luby positioned his cruiser in a way to try to stop the wrong way vehicle from hitting the cruiser or innocent motorists behind the cruiser head-on.
Velazquez's vehicle, according to Troopers, side-swiped Trooper Luby's cruiser. The cruiser was sent into a light pole.
State Police say Velazquez attempted to continue onto I-91 Southbound Exit 33 on-ramp in the correct direction but the Honda he was driving became disabled on the ramp.
Velazquez fled on foot.
Trooper Luby is receiving hospital care at a local hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
State Police say multiple arrests are forthcoming.
