Wayne Brady is ready to host Sunday night’s American Music Awards, and while he may be center stage most of the night, the 50-year-old says his main duty is shining a spotlight on the deserving musicians that will fill Los Angeles’ Microsoft Theatre while making no promises he won’t “fangirl.”

“When I got the phone call to host the show, I was happier over the fact that I could be in the room with potentially people that I love, that I listen to,” he told Audacy’s Julia. “More so than ‘oh, Wayne. You’re hosting the show!’ [I thought to myself] ‘That’s great! Is Drake gonna be there?! Can I talk to Drake?…’ So as a big music nerd, that’s what I’m excited about.”
Drake isn’t the only artist who should be prepared to get a lot of love from Brady. He also shared he’s caught wind of a trapeze performance by P!nk and has plans to cheer her on “like a 14-year-old girl.”
“I’m a Big P!nk fan” he said. “I was told just yesterday, by our producer Jesse Collins that P!nk is going to be doing a thing at the very top. So, I’m gonna freak out and I’m going to be very unprofessional, I’m gonna scream like a 14-year-old girl, and then I’m going to compose myself,” he laughed.
P!nk won’t be the only one to show some athleticism during Sunday night’s show. Wayne, who is currently competing on Dancing With The Stars, says he’ll take any opportunity he can to enhance the show with some of his favorite dance moves. “There will be dancing” he stated. “If I can work in a nod to ‘Dancing With The Stars’ or to bring my dance partner over to do that, then absolutely I’m going to take a shot at it!”
While clearly in good spirits for the show, Brady shared on top of all the fun that will be had, there is a lot of work that goes into prepping as a host, explaining he takes the job very seriously.
“The mistake that I find when I watch shows… if a host is completely unprepared, you take your audience out of it,” the said. “It’s may job, especially as the AMA host… I’m listening to music, I’m making notes, I’m watching music videos because the AMAs, it’s a music show for music fans, voted on by music fans… so I’ve gotta know what I’m talking about!”
