Bio-security expert: 'It's not like we actually have a choice between disease control and the economy, the two things are tied together'

(KFTK) – Professor Raina MacIntyre, a bio-security expert from the Kirby Institute at the UNSW in Sydney, joined Randy for a conversation about the Covid-19 pandemic.

"We're not quite as bad as the situation in the US," says Professor MacIntyre said of Australia, "and hopefully we'll be able to prevent things from getting as they have gotten in places like New York.  Every country has had a similar trajectory, kind of not really seeing the silent growth of the epidemic until it hits the health system.

MacIntyre says there is no way to choose between an economy or fighting the disease, "the two things are tied together. If you don't control the disease, the economic consequesnces are going to be much worse and the recovery is going to take much longer."

"We've got to just see the big picture, I think that for most people alive today, this is something unprecedented that none of us have seen anything like, ever," says MacIntyre, "economic experts saying  that it's even more significant than the first world war or the second world war in terms of it's impact."
