(KFTK) – SLU Law Professor and former attorney for President Gerald Ford joined Randy for a somber conversation dealing with the current unrest in the US.
"Some of your listeners, no doubt, are old enough to remember the 1960s and the early 1970s," says Willard. "Not to diminish what we are experiencing today in 2020, but the factual reality is that what we are experiencing today pales in comaparison."
Greg and Randy agree that the US, "ain't perfect," in its dealings with minorities, specifically in regards to African Americans.
"We need look no further than to our United States Constitution and how millions of African Americans were treated in that document," points out Willard. He reminds Randy that Missouri, "within my lifetime, had in its constitution, a constitutional prohibition from African American children attending the same school as a caucasion child."
The presidential-power expert points out that the "guardrails" that used to be in place surrounding political conversations seems to have been torn down, and continue to be by the media, the public and even the President.
"When the President of the United States, Randy, publicly states, that a decision by the Supreme Court was 'a shotgun blast in the face of conservatives and Republicans' that is very, very destructive to these guardrails," says Willard. "My hope is that all sides of these arguments can be a little more constructive and a little less divisive with their rhetoric in the public square so we can get at the root causes and effects of centuries discrimination in our country on the one hand, and as to the President's comments , the horrible, horrible situation we find ourselves in with immigration."
