Christian Toto, editor of hollywoodintoto.com, and the podcast Right on Hollywood talks about the Judy Blume attack on Twitter after she endorsed JK Rowling in a Sunday Times Article.
The debacle began when Judy was being interviewed by The Sunday Times, due to the theatrical adaptation of her popular novel Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret coming out next Friday.
The article, written by Hadley Freeman, says that after discussing briefly about the magic of the Harry Potter novel. "And I love [Rowling],” Blume immediately interjects. “I am behind her 100 per cent as I watch from afar." and she later adds that "You would probably know better than me, and I’m not up on every word that’s been said. But it can also be said that [Rowling’s] a victim of Twitter, because people believe what they read on Twitter, whatever you actually said,”
People on Twitter got irate because while it was a brief bit, it was the headline of the Times article.
Christian Toto said, "I think the outrage that might be ensuing for what she said would be very microscopic. The people who are doing all these horrible things on Twitter and really rallying against certain people, it's often a very small group, I think the mainstream of America or any country that might be willing to see, Are You There God? It's Me Margaret. wouldn't care. But there is this fear that if you anger a select community, that they will be hell to pay. And I think she sensed that, maybe someone told her she shouldn't do that."
Blume later rebutted the points people are making on Twitter, saying she "wholly supports the Trans community" and the quote was taken out of context.
Lionsgate will still be releasing the movie on April 28th in theaters nationwide.
