FM NewsTalk 97.1 Chief Meteorologist Dave Murray introduced meteorology on a nightly basis to local TV news in St. Louis in 1976. Hired at the age of 22 by KSDK-TV right out of graduate school, he was the first scientist to deliver nightly weathercasts with moving graphics, original forecasts, and explaining reasons why.
With a major in coastal forecasting from the University of Rhode Island and studying for his Master’s in thunderstorm forecasting at the University of Wyoming. To Dave, weather was serious, especially here in tornado alley. It could destroy your property or kill you. Dave today holds the record for continuous severe weather broadcasting as the lone anchor calling upon remote cameras and reporters in the field . . . 8 hours with one restroom break during the tornado that hit Lambert International Airport on April 22, 2011.
At age 29, the ABC Television Network noticed Dave, and tapped him to be their new Chief Meteorologist/Weathercaster for both “Good Morning America” with David Hartman and Joan Lunden, and “World News This Morning” with Steve Bell. Dave moved to New York and enjoyed the newness of an entertainment focus. During this time, among many assignments for GMA, he flew through Hurricane Diana along the Carolina coast with the National Oceanographic Aviation Administration (NOAA) team and covered eruptions of the volcano, Kilauea, on the Big Island of Hawaii, while travelling extensively throughout the U.S.
But ultimately, Dave missed the thrill of severe weather forecasting and returned to St. Louis. In the Midwest region, Dave holds 13 Emmy Awards for “Best Weathercaster” and has distinguished himself with “Dave Murray’s Long Range Weather Specials”, half hour programs. Four times yearly for each season they regularly win the top ratings spot during their time period, and coincidentally have made his white Labrador retrievers – currently Rain and Snowflake, formerly Sky, Sunshine and Starz – a bit famous on Facebook and Instagram appearing on the shows.
Currently Dave makes numerous daily appearances on FM NewsTalk 97.1, including the popular “Dave Glover Show” for weathercasting plus conversation with Dave and crew from 4:30-4:45pm weekdays.
Dave has been married to former KSDK-TV news reporter, Janis Settle Murray, since 1981. They have one child, Austin Mark Settle Murray, born in 1982. A graduate of Mary Institute Country Day School (MICDS), the University of Southern California, and with his MBA from Washington University in St. Louis, he is currently a Senior Manager of Pricing Strategies at Walmart Headquarters in Bentonville, AR, and married to a fellow MICDS grad!
