(KMOX) - The chair of the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies, Republican Sen. Roy Blunt of Missouri, says they're "planning for a normal inauguration" and he expects President Donald Trump to be on stage.

Blunt was a guest on ABC’s "This Week" with George Stephanopoulos to discuss the 2020 elections and the inaugural ceremonies on Sunday. It came as the U.S. hit a new daily record of COVID-19 cases – 126,742 – according to Johns Hopkins University.

“The six-person committee — three senators, three House members — that I chair, we're moving forward anticipating an outside full-scale inauguration,” Blunt said. "It's easier to scale back than to scale up and we're going to be talking to people this week about that very topic and hope that the person who's sworn in on Inaugural Day sees it as a great day, even though it happens at the Capitol [it] is up to the Congress to decide."

Blunt didn't not concede that Joe Biden has officially defeated President Trump, saying the election process still needs to play out. But he did say he expects both candidates to be on stage.

"I'm confident we're going to see that," Blunt says. "I expect to see both Vice President Biden and President Trump on the stage on Inaugural Day and that will be a powerful message no matter which one of them is sworn in that day."
