A 5-year-old girl is dead after a shooting on a Bay Area freeway in California.

The shooting happened just before 7 p.m. Saturday along southbound Interstate 880 in Fremont.

The girl was with her family, on their way to the Outback Steakhouse in Milpitas for a birthday dinner, when she was shot, according to a GoFundMe account. The girl, identified only as Eliyanah, "passed away within 30 seconds of the incident," according to the posting.

"Eliyanah was a fun-loving little girl who loved life, had a giving heart, close with her three siblings, especially her brother who were 11 months apart," the posting says. "Both were so excited for Easter before the family was torn to pieces by this tragic event. Eliyanah would have been 6 on the 21st of April."

Police believe the deadly incident may be connected to another shooting in Fremont that happened around the same time Saturday. According to the Freemont Police Department, a vehicle pulled up next to a pedestrian and someone inside the car fired shots. The pedestrian was not injured.

"Preliminary investigation suggested that the shooting could be gang-related," police said in a statement.

A few hours later and nearly 40 miles away, officers in Santa Cruz spotted a vehicle that was possibly associated with both shootings.

Police attempted to stop the car along Highway 17, but the suspect fled and a pursuit was initiated.

"During the pursuit on Hwy 17, officers observed the vehicle's occupants discarding a firearm from the car," Santa Cruz Police said in a statement.

The car was stopped a short distance later and three people were taken into custody. The gun that was tossed from the car was also recovered.

Both shootings remain under investigation.
