DETROIT (WWJ) -- Thousands of older Jeeps are being recalled for a transmission issue.

Stellantis has announced it is recalling over 63,000 Jeep Cherokees after reports that the vehicles can suddenly shut down.

"The vehicles have a power transfer unit which can disengage the transmission," WWJ AutoBeat Reporter Jeff Gilbert explained. "As a result, they can lose power, or even roll away while in park."

The recall covers Jeep Cherokee models from 2017 through 2019.

Vehicle owners are urged to make sure the parking break is applied when the vehicles are in park.

There have been more than 1,100 reports of problems over seven years, but no injuries or deaths, according to Stellantis.

Jeep is still working on a fix for the problem.

Owners of the Jeeps included in this recall will be notified.
