A look at the compromise on the Debt Ceiling and the new Budget

Stephen Moore, Distinguished Fellow in Economics at the Heritage Foundation and writer of Govzilla, talks about the new compromise on the debt ceiling and the budget and how we had to compromise.

Stephen Moore writes a lot of columns for the Wall Street Journal and recently wrote "Govzilla: How the Relentless Growth of Government Is Devouring Our Economy—And Our Freedom".

On the Subject of Biden's compromise with Speaker McCarthy, he said to Annie Frey that "I mean, Joe Biden is the most financially irresponsible president in my lifetime, maybe ever. And this is probably the best Republicans probably could have gotten from Biden. So am I going to dance a little jig here and say this is a wonderful thing? No, I'm not. And I know people, I've gotten so much angry letters and emails and texts from friends because I say, well, probably this is going to have to pass because this is probably the best we can do. And people say, oh, you're surrendering to Biden, but this is just the reality. And I do think this sets up Republicans pretty well for 2024. They can say, look, we had to vote for the ceiling. We didn't like it. We held our nose. We made some reforms."

He did not like certain parts of the budget, he maligned the lack of cuts to the IRS, saying that the 87,000 agents assigned to the agency are meant to "To go after people like me and you and the people listening to the show. If you have a conservative point of view then they're going to come after you. They're going to weaponize it's just like they've weaponized the State Department and the Justice Department, the FBI and the IRS previously. So I'm angry that McCarthy didn't get a better deal on that."

On the subject of the new federal SNAP requirements requiring people receiving benefits to work at least 20 hours a week "Most of us aren't in part time jobs. We're in full time jobs to raise the family and then it only applies to certain programs and it doesn't apply to single mothers. It should because the best thing is get people back into the workforce. So anyway, I'm a little frustrated but it is what it is."

After being asked about Biden's green energy policies, Steve pondered, saying "Now, one little bit of good news is that we did get some more drilling permitting and things like that that Biden hates in this bill and so that's a little bit of a silver lining here but my gosh, we have more oil, gas, coal than any other country in the world. We could be a totally energy independent and dominant if we just went back to the Trump policies and instead Biden is building windmills."
