Conservative media pundit Ann Coulter says that she will vote for former President Donald Trump — despite referring to him as an “awful, awful person” — because of his choice for vice president, Sen. JD Vance (R-OH).
Coulter made her remarks while speaking with C-SPAN’s “Washington Journal” on Sunday, noting that she’s changed her thoughts on voting for Trump even after swearing him off and supporting his rivals in the 2024 primary cycle.
During the interview, Coulter was asked why she would vote for Trump after being so vocally against him, and she noted that, in part, it’s because she thinks “if he loses, he will be running again in four years, and then he will have lost four successive elections for us.”
But also, the choice has to do with who Trump picked as his running mate.
“Truthfully, I really like his choice of JD Vance, which I recommended back in May,” she said. “Can’t trust Trump as far as I can throw him, but I do trust JD Vance to care about the left behind people.”
Coulter was asked about her change in opinion on Trump, as she once wrote a book in 2016 titled, “In Trump We Trust: E Pluribus Awesome!”
Giving high praise to Trump’s 2016 campaign, she said that while the book should still be read by Republican politicians, Trump has grown apart from what he represented in his first run for office.
“I do think the 2016 Trump campaign, it was one of the greatest campaigns in world history – in part because it really changed the Republican Party to a party I preferred,” she said.
“So I loved Trump coming out and saying, ‘Oh, I’m rich and going to fix the country,” Coulter said. “But the main reason, and if you read the book, by the way, I make it very clear that personally, Trump is an awful, awful person. We are making an exception this one time because we need a wall on the border.”
