A Southern Illinois University professor says there are workplace pluses and minuses to March Madness and the NCAA tournament, which started today.
SIU Professor of Management Steve Karau said that on the plus side, checking on your NCAA brackets at work is a good time for taking a break and re-energizing.
“It gives an opportunity to maybe connect with your workers and talk about something enjoyable, a joint interest and maybe bond and have something fun going on in the workplace.”
He points out that the NCAA tournament is fairly short--three weeks—and said that it can make sense for businesses to let people’s passion take its course during March Madness, within reason.

The professor said that allowing March Madness in the workplace can make people more content with their jobs and that that can translate into long-term productivity.
