The internationally popular game of cricket may be finding its way onto high school fields around Illinois, if state Rep. Jennifer Sanlitro (R-Hanover Park) has her way.
The game is played with a bat and ball between two teams of eleven players, and it can look a lot like baseball. An estimated 2.5 billion people follow the sport around the world.
“Cricket is not only growing in popularity internationally — in Europe, Asia, and Latin America — but is growing in popularity inside our own country,” Sanalitro said.
She has introduced a resolution urging the Illinois High School Association to take steps towards officially recognizing the game of cricket. It was adopted by the elementary and secondary education’s School Curriculum and Policies Committee, and the proposal is now making its way to the House floor for consideration.
“Texas, Florida, California, Atlanta and Indiana all support the game of cricket, so this resolution is an important step in making Illinois a cultural leader,” she said.
