An experiment, published in Foreign Language Annals, demonstrated that people who completed five units in Spanish or French courses on Duolingo perform as well on reading and listening tests as those who completed four semesters of a language in college. Duolingo is a free language-learning mobile and web app.
The news was revealed during this week’s edition of What’s On The Web With Anna Bohlmann on The Marc Cox Morning Show.
“I’ve never understood the language requirement in college,” Bohlmann said. “If you aren’t interested in learning a language, you’re going to do whatever it takes to get a good grade, but ultimately, it’s going in one ear and out the other. And I think this study proves it.”
