On Wednesday, Elon Musk announced that he was forming a new artificial intelligence company that is expected to try and rival OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

Musk made the announcement on Twitter, linking to the xAI’s Twitter page. A website is connected to the profile, which says that the company’s goal is to “understand the true nature of the universe.”

xAI already has dozens of employees, and the company will be led by Musk, as the website says he “will work closely with X (Twitter), Tesla, and other companies to make progress towards our mission.”

The move from Musk comes after months of criticism shared about OpenAI and its chatbot. He has gone as far as to say that AI could cause “civilization destruction” and that the AI race was “out of control.”

He also said there was danger in AI being taught “woke” values, saying that it could be “deadly.”

The “woke” training that Musk was referring to was ChatGPTs settings that include safeguards to prevent the chatbot from saying things that could be considered biased or offensive.

Still, Wednesday’s announcement shouldn’t come as a surprise, as Musk has teased the idea of starting an AI company before, most recently while speaking with Tucker Carlson in April.

“We’re going to start something which I call TruthGPT,” Musk said at the time. He went on to describe his venture as a “maximum truth-seeking AI,” adding that he wants it to care “about understanding the universe.”

There is little other information available about xAI at the moment, though the website shared that it will hold a Twitter Spaces event where questions can be asked on Friday, July 14.
